14 August 23 - Staffing, Liability & charging correctly

This weeks post covers the issue of staff and liability, which is every more present in todays changing business landscape!

It's important to understand that when you provide inflatable services, you're not acting as a babysitter, but rather taking on complete responsibility for the inflatable, its usage, and any incidents or accidents that may occur.

Under normal circumstances, if the inflatable is properly set up according to EN14960 standards, undergoes annual testing, daily safety checks, and has pressure and wind conditions recorded, your liability is usually limited.

However, when you assign staff to supervise the inflatable, you are assuming full liability for all aspects, irrespective of fault or blame. This carries significant weight and demands careful consideration.

Consequently, it's crucial to set your charges at an appropriate level that reflects the high level of risk involved and the potential for claims. Keep in mind that claims can be made up to a child's 23rd birthday, which encompasses a considerable liability period.

To balance this risk, it's advisable to charge full commercial rates. The prevailing industry standard rate is £35 per person per hour (minimum 4 hours), a rate that is often well-received by various organizations.

Considering that professionals in other fields like mechanics, plumbers, and handymen charge rates up to £60 per hour, £35 is a reasonable and justifiable rate. Many companies even charge £50 or more.

Charging higher fees enables you to attract and employ individuals of a higher caliber, compensate them well, and foster reliability. This approach fosters a more professional and dependable service, reducing the likelihood of claims and ensuring a safer and more trustworthy experience.
