DBS Check Guidance for inflatable hire companies
In the bouncy castle industry, a DBS check is not a legal requirement. In fact its physically illegal for an organisation to insist on one when there is no category to apply under.. There is no specific category for our industry, and no plans to create one. Here's a clear and professional guide to handling this issue:
Logical Perspective: It's inappropriate for anyone in a position of care to leave a bouncy castle installer, who is a complete stranger, unattended with children. If this occurs, the responsible party should reassess their own role in ensuring child safety. This perspective can often resolve requests for a DBS check with a polite, firm, and fair response.
Supervision Responsibility: When we supervise an event, our role is to oversee the equipment, not the children. The responsibility for child supervision always lies with the parent, guardian, teacher, or caregiver. W should never ever be in a position to look after the children.
Legal Standpoint: It's crucial to note that it is illegal to insist on a DBS check for a position that does not legally require one.
Practical Approach & how to apply: Despite the above points, sometimes it’s easier to comply with a request to avoid conflict and expedite the job. In such cases, you or your staff can apply for a basic DBS check personally i there own names as a general "basic check" and ou then compensate them for there actions instead.
If needed, I assist staff members in applying for a basic DBS check. The process is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. The basic check costs approximately £12-15. Its an absolute pain tin the backside but sometimes easier to tick the illusive box of the incompetents asking for them in the first place for an easy life. Sad but true advice for such a small expense.

This guidance should help clarify our stance on DBS checks and ensure all staff members understand the procedures and rationale behind our policy.
