The UK inflatable industry continues to evolve, and 2026 has already brought several important developments for manufacturers, hire companies and operators.
During August there has not been a major new HSE rule change, but recent developments are beginning to have a real operational impact across the industry.
These include greater emphasis on inflation-pressure monitoring, record keeping, correct blower selection, evacuation performance, documentation and inspection, alongside developments involving BS EN 14960 and specialist products such as sealed inflatables and bungee runs.

1. BS EN 14960 – Where Do We Currently Stand?
There has understandably been considerable discussion within the inflatable industry surrounding BS EN 14960 and the future direction of inflatable safety requirements.
Our advice is simple:
Don't make important business decisions based on rumours or social-media speculation.
Commercial inflatable operators should continue ensuring their equipment is properly manufactured, operated, maintained and inspected in accordance with the requirements applicable to that equipment.
HSE guidance states that new inflatables should have an initial test and should subsequently undergo annual inspection by a competent person.
For manufacturers, the direction of travel also reinforces the importance of good technical documentation.
That includes information such as:
- product dimensions;
- operating pressure;
- blower requirements;
- anchorage;
- user restrictions;
- operating instructions;
- maintenance information;
- inspection and testing records.

2. Internal Pressure – One of the Most Important Issues for Operators
One of the clearest messages within current HSE guidance concerns inflatable operating pressure.
A commercial inflatable should not simply “look hard enough”.
The inflatable needs to operate within the pressure range specified by its manufacturer.
HSE guidance says regular pressure readings should be taken using a suitable pressure-measuring device such as a manometer, and those readings should be recorded.
For operators, this means knowing:
- What pressure should this inflatable operate at?
- Where should the pressure be measured?
- Which blower should be used?
- Does it require more than one blower?
- What should I do if the pressure falls outside the manufacturer's limits?
Pressure isn't simply a technical figure buried inside an operating manual.
It can directly affect the inflatable's structural performance.
3. Choosing the Correct Blower Matters
We regularly get asked:
“What size blower do I need for my bouncy castle?”
The answer isn't automatically “the biggest blower available”.
Different inflatables require different levels of airflow and pressure.
A standard commercial bouncy castle can have very different requirements from a giant obstacle course, slide or large multiplay.

5. BS EN 14960-4:2025 – Bungee Runs
One of the most important recent standards developments for a specific type of inflatable is BS EN 14960-4:2025, covering inflatable bungee runs.
Bungee runs require additional consideration because the user isn't simply bouncing or sliding.
The inflatable works together with a harness, connection system and bungee cord.
For manufacturers and operators, information surrounding the bungee system is therefore particularly important.
This includes areas such as:
- cord specification;
- original cord length;
- extension;
- attachment system;
- cord condition;

6. Sealed Inflatables – An Important Developing Area
One of the most significant recent developments is HSE's dedicated guidance covering the safe supply, inspection and operation of sealed inflatables.
Sealed-air equipment has become increasingly popular throughout the leisure industry.
Unlike traditional continuous-flow inflatables, sealed products don't rely on a blower continuously replacing escaping air.
That difference means they require different design and operating considerations.
Areas highlighted within HSE guidance include:
- design;
- initial testing;
- operating pressure;
- test pressure;
- inspection;
- maintenance information;
- repair procedures;
- operating instructions.
For manufacturers, the message is important:
A sealed inflatable shouldn't simply be treated as a conventional sewn inflatable without a blower.

The operating manual shouldn't simply disappear into a filing cabinet.
It can contain essential information including:

- maximum wind speed;

- anchoring requirements;
- setup instructions;
- supervision requirements;
- evacuation information;
- maintenance requirements;
- inspection information.

Inflatable condition → anchorage → pressure → blower → electrical supply → entrances and exits → safety mats → wind conditions → supervision → surrounding hazards.
For outdoor operation, HSE guidance also requires operators to use an anemometer to measure wind conditions.
A weather app isn't a replacement for measuring the wind where the inflatable is actually being operated.
HSE states a general maximum wind speed of 24mph / 38km/h / Force 5, although the manufacturer's stated limit may be lower.
If the manufacturer's limit is lower, that lower limit applies.

9. The Hire Market Is Moving Towards Experiences
Safety and compliance aren't the only things changing.
Customer demand is changing too.

What Should UK Inflatable Hire Companies Be Doing Now?
Our advice for August 2026 is straightforward:
Don't panic and don't operate based on rumours.
Instead:
- Make sure annual inspections are current.
- Keep the manufacturer's operating information for every inflatable.
- Know the correct operating pressure.
- Carry and use an appropriate manometer.
- Carry and use an anemometer for outdoor operation.
- Keep appropriate operating and safety records.
- Use the correct blower specified for each inflatable.
- Check anchorage and surrounding hazards every time equipment is set up.
- Understand what happens to larger equipment if blower power is lost.
- Make sure specialist equipment is inspected by somebody competent to inspect that type of device.
- Pay particular attention to documentation for sealed-air equipment.
- Keep records of significant repairs and modifications.
- Follow genuine published HSE guidance and the applicable standards rather than relying on social-media interpretation.
